When you open an image, Photoshop displays a “movie” on screen that helps you make adjustments. This is much better than having to open an image and then create a Grid (or Image Processor) to start making adjustments. The movie mode speeds up the process by making quick changes or by comparing two different edits. Settings can be applied via double-clicking on the thumbnail of the image or by using navigation buttons. As someone who finds a Grid view more intuitive, the movie feature is something I’ll miss.
You can apply a number of adjustments to the image in movie mode, such as brightness, exposure, black level, contrast, hue, saturation and white balance. Once you’ve made adjustments and want to save them, you can save as a new version without any changes—gets boring very quickly. You can also use the Adjustment Layers feature for a simple way to edit effects. While the movie now tracks the selected area, it was a bit less flexible compared to previous versions. Resizing canvas elements was also a bit slower. In the new version, you can resize components of your image to a width of 2000 px and height of 1200 px. After resizing, just click anywhere to toggle between horizontal and vertical modes. Resizing a Full-Screen mode image to a smaller size is still where I’d recommend it.
As we’ve seen, the shape layer, also known as the Crop tool, can be used in a similar way to a marquee selection, but it has advantages in that it can be slid along an image frame to accurately crop a photo. With regular crop tool, it’s difficult to align crops precisely, but a shape layer allows you to make precise crops where the crop lines are invisible to the user.
Adobe’s shape layers cut away even the sharpest parts of an image and allow you to edit content and crops almost as accurately as if you’d done it on a separate layer. They integrate with the tools to instantly ‘go to’ an exposed, colored and resized duplicate of the original image. So, what are shape layers?

This ensures that in the case of multiple edits, all images have exactly the same appearance in regards to style, resolution, and other similar information. Once you take a picture with a smartphone, for example, you might not be able to put a filter over or inside the image — even if the photo on the device has the same exact resolution as the one downloaded to your computer.
In PS5, this is no longer an issue. Now, even if you had compressed the original photo, Photoshop will still open up the metadata and automatically unpack the file and provide the information needed to go back and fix these issues.
Additionally, Photoshop has been given a huge productivity boost with Smart Sharpen. The new feature employs real-time video analysis to identify edges, improving image sharpness without tuning the tool. The new feature, part of Photoshop CC 2017, adds filters that detect edges in all kinds of images, from portraits to landscapes.
